music of the week thoughts 1.14.24 - 1.20.24

(❁´◡`❁) 🎵 Welcome to Lryn’s Music of the Week! 🎵 (❁´◡`❁)

Woo hoo! 3 weeks in a row y’all! Not going to lie, I’m suprised I have updated this on time AGAIN. Yet, here we are 🥰 With that being said, you can listen to this week’s music picks here.

To start, the playlist of the week is “Rabit” by Em on Spotify. Again, Em has compiled a list of absolutely amazing songs that have really captured the mood this week. With the changes going on in my life currently, I have been feeling productive, hopeful, and energized. However, there have also been hints of anxiety over what is to come within the next 6 months alone. From “Sundress” by A$AP Rocky, to “Girls” by MARINA, to “Elastic” by Joey Purp, to “High Priestess” by Santigold, the songs on this playlist have encaptured the wide range of emotions apparent within my general mood this week. Let me know which songs resonate with you from this playlist.

Next we have the album of the week: “Live at the Royal Albert Hall” by Arctic Monkeys. I know that live albums are not everyone’s cup of tea but omg does this live album hit the spot. With a ton of popular hits and personal favorites of mine, the compilation of tracks on this album is beautiful. Don’t even get me started on the live version of 505… I also have this album on vinyl and let me just say… *chefs kiss* absolutely gorgeous. There have been so many times where I will put this record on and get lost in cleaning, painting, or even just my own thoughts as I lie in bed. What are your thoughts on live albums?

The artist of the week is Mother Mother. Outside of a great discography, I love what Mother Mother stands for as a band. As someone who has felt lost and alienated at multiple points in my life, their lyrics bring about a sense of acceptance within the self. At such a time in the world, let alone the U.S., Mother Mother’s lyrics and presence is more needed than ever. Plus, I just love the bad b vibes I get from their music in general haha.

Lastly, we have my top 3 songs of the week. This week’s song picks relate heavily to the mood I expressed earlier in regards to the playlist of the week. The songs’ energies range from wanting justice to wanting acceptance, and beyond.

#3 is “Vixen” by Destroy Boys. I have getting back into Destroy Boys again recently, and so far “Vixen” remains a top favorite song from this band.

#2 is “Around the Fur” by Deftones. Again, I have also been getting back into Deftones lately, which has been reinforced by the depression that has increased over the past couple months given the weather and winter season.

#1 is “Body” by Mother Mother. See above for my thoughts on the band and their songs.

If you made it this far, thank you for taking the time out of your day to read my silly little thoughts about the music I like. Feel free to reach out with any comments/thoughts/reactions concerning the selections this week! Stay tuned for next week’s music picks. And again, fingers-crossed another update happens again next Sunday.

music of the week thoughts 1.7.24 - 1.13.24

(❁´◡`❁) 🎵 Welcome to Lryn’s Music of the Week! 🎵 (❁´◡`❁)

Okay y’all, I did it… I have updated the Music of the Week picks on Sunday like I said I would. I will hold for applause. In all seriousness, I am really proud of myself for updating and making a post today. Historically I am not that great with continuing self-led “complex” projects such as this, at least ones that involves weekly deadlines I set for myself (all current and future employers, no you did not just read that… this is a very specific circumstance). Anyways, without further ado, here are my thoughts on my picks this week:

You can listen to this week’s music here.

Starting off with my playlist of the week, I chose 🍄🌱🌙 *+Gremlincore+* 🍄🌱🌙 by The_Emtpy_Ketchup_bottle on Spotify (sorry Apple Music users :P ). When I tell you that I unintentionally/intentionally embodied this playlist this week, I am being 100% serious. This past week has been a major preparation for the next year ahead of me. I have so many changes occurring this year: moving to another state, marriage, and graduation from my master’s program just to name a few. I need to get my gremlin energy out now before I have to be super serious and/or professional practically 100 hours per week for the next year. What are sort of changes are you anticipating this year? When do you revert to being a little gremlin?

Moving along, this album of this week is Pure Heroine by Lorde. Say what you want about Lorde, this album was it for me in middle school. Honestly, every song on this album just hits right for me, depending on my mood. I can specifically remember blasting Ribs in my beat-up Skull Candy headphones as I would step off the bus into my school, walking towards my locker in the morning (multiple days a week). Of course, while listening to this album in those sort of moments, manic-pixie-dream-girl-tumblr-icon me thought I was exactly that, a manic-pixie-dream-girl-tumblr-icon. Annnnd of course I was not that lol. Regardless, this album still resonates with the hidden tumblr icon in me and I am curious to see if anyone else can relate to that.

Next I bring you the artist of the week: Pierce the Veil. Again, say what you want, this band and I have been through it together. The first time I listened to Pierce the Veil, I was just a wee little lad (and by that I mean in 6th grade). I had just started exploring the “emo” genre and stumbled upon the music video for “Chemical Kids and Mechanical Brides”. The infatuation was immediate. In 2015 I went to the Pierce the Veil/Sleeping with Sirens World Tour (only the OG emo kids will remember how absolutely ICONIC this tour was) with my two besties and now fiancé. When mans asked me to be his girlfriend at this concert during the Sleeping with Sirens set, I truly felt like I was living in a fanfiction in that moment. AND the fanfic did not end there! After being apart for a hot minute, mans asked me out AGAIN using the same song from that concert/artist within the same week as the original “asking-out.” LIKE COME ON!! Okay, reeling it back in… Pierce the Veil has also been with me through those moments when I was extremely depressed as a teenager. With their newest album, “The Jaws of Life,” my love for this band has only deepened. If you do decide to give them a listen, let me know your thoughts and some of your favorite songs!

To finish this week’s post, I want to dive into the top 3 songs of the week. Most, if not all of these songs, are also featured in the playlist of the week.

#3 is “Deceptacon” by Le Tigre. The bodily reaction that occurs whenever I hear this song is indescribable. Girl-boss✌️😘 me emerges and wants to just dance around my apartment when yelling the lyrics to no one in particular.

#2 is “Time Machine” by WILLOW. The vibes are purely immaculate on this one. WILLOW has come out with a beautiful selection of songs already, but surprisingly, this song has been a new find for me, despite being released in 2019. As someone who never feels like time is actually real, the focus on disconnect and the human experience in general is nice to hear come through.

#1 is (you guessed it) “Ribs” by Lorde. I don’t feel like I really need to share any further thoughts on this song (unless requested), just know that I have listened to this song at least 30 times this week.
