music of the week thoughts 1.21.24 - 1.27.24

(❁´◡`❁) 🎵 Welcome to Lryn’s Music of the Week! 🎵 (❁´◡`❁)

It has been almost a month since I have opened the site and I am so proud of myself for maintaining weekly updates. As a review, I definitely need to up my social media game, but for now, we are appreciating the small progress of these Music of the Week updates. With that being said, let’s get into the picks for this week

Playlist of the week: “mcr’s entire discography in the order of most danceable to most depressing” by Seth on Spotify. As stated by the creator of the playlist, this compliation consists of “mcr’s entire discography in the order of most danceable to most depressing so by the end of the evening you’re crying on the floor to desert song.” Honestly… very accurate description. I spent all of yesterday listening to this playlist and it was an emotional rollercoaster of a day within my headphones. What started off as bop after bop and some booty shaking turned into me contemplating my reality and past decisions while listening to “The Light Behind Your Eyes.” As someone who has also been an avid MCR fan for over a decade now, there were also so many emotions brought up from my teenage years that I was not expecting to come up when listening to this playlist. Anyways… let me know your thoughts on this playlist 😊

Album of the week: “Lust for Life” by Lana Del Rey. Okay. So just like MCR, Lana brings something up for me from middle school and high school that I am never prepared to re-experience. HOWEVER, every time I hear any song from this album, it is an experience. My favorite songs from this album include: “Cherry”, “Summer Bummer”, “Groupie Love”, and “Heroin.” The fact that A$AP Rocky is on this album twice already has listeners knowing that the songs that he is featured on are going to be absolutely *chef’s kiss* Also, listening to Lana as a woman just does something in my brain that is indescribable.

Artist of the week: Now, Now. Alright, so I did not realize how much my middle school experiences would be trending in my selections this week, but here we are, with another artist that I absolutely went applesauce over at the age of 12. Let me bring you back to the summer between 7th and 8th grade. The album “Threads” had just come out the summer prior in 2012 and I gravitated towards it. Searching for songs to appeal to and resonate with my adolescent mind, I stumbled upon “School Friends” by Now, Now. What a perfect song to encapsulate the feelings I had towards my crush that had become entangled in the social relationships we shared at the time. Now that I listen to that song again, I realize how much it applies even more so to the relationships I had during senior year of high school and undergrad. It’s crazy how songs seem to transcend time like that… Anyways, the rest of the album is a transformative experience. I highly suggest that you listen to this album with headphones on in the dark of your room as you lay in bed at night… **WARNING - I am not to blame for any crying that might happen**

Lastly, we have landed at my top 3 songs of the week. These songs come from Now, Now and My Chemical Romance. Hitting a wide range of emotions, these 3 songs encapture the splits in my moods when reflecting upon my past week.

#3 is "Gun" by My Chemical Romance. I have been having a lot of feelings surrounding the upcoming elections, issues within the U.S., and other tragedies taking place worldwide, resulting in a lot of anger and grief towards the state of humanity. This song I think speaks to some of those feelings. I highly suggest paying attention to the lyrics of this song as you reflect upon your own feelings towards the state of the country and the world right now.

#2 is “School Friends” by Now, Now. See above for my thoughts on the song.

#1 is “Party Poison” by My Chemical Romance. The adrenaline and the energy that starts pumping through my body when I hear the opening cymbals clashing in this song is unreal. Gerard Way’s vocals and musical artistry, matched with Ray Toro and Frank Iero’s guitar mastery, while bouncing off of Mikey Way’s bass notes, creates a symphony of sounds that just makes my brain feel happy.

If you made it this far, thank you for taking the time out of your day to read my silly little thoughts about the music I like. Feel free to reach out with any comments/thoughts/reactions concerning the selections this week! Stay tuned for next week’s music picks.
